Audi and Porsche Plan to Build EV Charging Stations in Brazil

Recently, “Raízen”, a Brazilian joint venture partially funded by Volkswagen Group’s car brands Audi, Porsche and Shell, announced the establishment of a partnership to build 20 electric vehicle charging piles in Brazil.

Brazil’s “São Paulo State” reported on May 21 that the plan has received an investment of 24 million reais and is expected to install fast electric vehicle charging piles by March 2024. The EV chargers will be located at Shell’s service stations as part of Shell’s charging program.

The new EV charger will have a power of 150 kilowatts (kW), capable of charging an electric vehicle to 80 percent in 30 minutes. Users will be able to reserve charging time through the app “Tupinambá” and settle the charge electronically, that is to say, everything can be done through a smartphone. In addition to making it easier for users to find the location of EV charging piles, the app can also help users avoid queuing for charging.

“The expansion of the fast EV charging station cooperation is part of the plan to provide comfort and convenience for customers and strengthens Porsche’s commitment to electric vehicles,” said Peter Vogel, CEO of Porsche Brazil.

“Audi AG has a strong electric vehicle offering in Brazil. Therefore, the company is looking to drive the expansion of the charging infrastructure in Brazil. The development of electric vehicles depends on the product, and a service network that can keep up with demand, so we are looking at This long-term goal,” said Daniel Rojas, CEO and President of Audi Brazil.

It is reported that by the end of 2021, Audi Brazil has invested 20 million reals in its dealerships to install electric vehicle charging piles with a power of 150kW. In addition, the company has also invested 10 million reals in the installation of AC electric vehicle charging piles. Porsche Brazil also invested 32 million reais to build the charging network.

According to ABVE, Brazil’s electric vehicle charging network will triple in size by 2022 and currently has about 3,000 public electric vehicle charging stations, with a coverage rate of 0.24 stations per 10 vehicles, although the association recommends a reasonable ratio of 3 stations, thus requiring substantial investment in EV charging infrastructure. Most of Brazil’s charging stations are concentrated in the southeastern region such as Sao Paulo state. As of October 2021, the large majority of electric vehicle charging station connectors in Brazil were Type 2 EV Chargers.
