EV charging stations are equipped only with standalone charging platforms. They are ideally suited for widespread construction in commercial areas, residential communities, and parking lots near areas with a high density of electric vehicles. These charging stations are ideal for vehicles with small built-in chargers. The charging power sockets of the standalone small EV charging stations are easy to operate and are based on intelligent manual touchscreen displays, which offer convenient and quick operations. After charging, consumer bills are promptly printed out. Unlike gas stations, charging stations offer entirely self-service operations. After connecting the EV Charging Cable and inserting the smart card, vehicle owners can choose between “regular charging” and “fast charging” modes through the interactive interface.

Classification of EV Charging Stations

Depending on the type of current, EV charging stations can be divided into AC EV Home Charger, DC EV chargers, and hybrid EV chargers, which use the corresponding charging methods to safely charge the vehicle’s power battery.

DC Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

The DC electric vehicle charging station, colloquially known as “fast charging,” is a device installed outside the electric vehicle and connected to the AC power grid. It provides a low-power DC power supply for the electric vehicle’s power battery. The DC EV charger has a charging function and can monitor and control the charging battery status in real-time. In addition, the DC EV charger can measure the charging power.

The DC EV charger’s input voltage uses a three-phase four-wire AC380V (±15%), with a frequency of 50Hz, outputting adjustable DC power, charging the electric vehicle’s power battery directly. The general charging power is 1040kW, with a charging time of 14 hours. The space it occupies is also small (below 1~2m²). Because the charging power is not substantial, the average unit power can meet the usage requirements. Because the DC EV charger uses a three-phase four-wire power supply system, it can provide enough power, and the range of adjustable voltage and current output is extensive, which can meet the requirements of fast charging.

The DC EV charger has advantages such as unmanned operation, intelligent card swiping consumption, and regional network management functions, making it convenient for the operational department management. The DC EV charger requires small investments, takes up little space, and the power grid can easily meet the requirements, hence they can be extensively installed in parking lots, office buildings, shopping centers, hotels, restaurants, scenic spots, streets with parking spaces, and residential communities.

AC Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

The AC electric vehicle charging station, colloquially known as “slow charging,” is a device installed outside the electric vehicle and connected to the AC power grid. It provides an AC power supply for the electric vehicle’s on-board charger (i.e., the charger installed on the electric vehicle), and also has a metering and billing function. The AC EV charger only provides power output and does not have a charging function; it needs to be connected to the on-board charger to charge the electric vehicle. It acts as an AC charging power source and has the advantages of a small footprint and flexible deployment.

The AC EV Home Charger provides a single or double AC220V/380V output interface, allowing electric vehicles to use on-board chargers to charge the electric vehicle’s power battery. The AC EV charger is composed of a cabinet, power distribution unit, electricity metering, card swiping consumption, and intelligent management system. The output power of the AC EV charger is generally AC220V (5kW) / AC380V (20kW), and its real charging power is limited by the on-board charger, generally, the charging power of small electric vehicles is between 2~3kW. The AC EV charger requires small investments, takes up little space, and the power grid can easily meet the requirements, hence they can be extensively installed in parking lots, office buildings, shopping centers, hotels, restaurants, scenic spots, streets with parking spaces, and residential communities.

Because the costs are low and the charging time is convenient, electric vehicles will prioritize charging at night. Since most families in China do not have their own private garage, and outdoor private wiring is not allowed, almost every electric vehicle must be equipped with an AC EV charger.

AC/DC Hybrid EV Charging Stations

The AC/DC hybrid EV charger can provide conventional and fast charging methods. During the day when there is a lot of charging business, DC charging is used for fast charging. When there are fewer users charging at night, AC charging is used for slow charging. The AC/DC hybrid EV charger can realize both AC and DC charging at the same time and also realize interlocking charging. It adopts a modular design for easy maintenance.

The input voltage of the AC/DC hybrid EV charger adopts a three-phase four-wire AC380V (±15%), with a frequency of 50Hz. The DC output port outputs adjustable DC power, charging the electric vehicle’s power battery directly. The general charging power is 1040kW, with a charging time of 14 hours. The AC output port outputs AC220V (5kW) / AC380V (20kW) AC power, providing a charging power supply for the electric vehicle’s on-board charger.

The AC/DC hybrid EV charger has advantages such as unmanned operation, intelligent card swiping consumption, and regional network management functions, making it convenient for the operational department management. The AC/DC hybrid EV charger requires small investments, takes up little space, and the power grid can easily meet the requirements, hence they can be extensively installed in parking lots, office buildings, shopping centers, hotels, restaurants, scenic spots, streets with parking spaces, and residential communities.
